Multimedia Presentations

The following CD-ROM presentations were developed with funding from the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research to train medical students to work appropriately and effectively with patients who have developmental disabilities.  They can be requested from the Matheny Institute for Research in Developmental Disabilities using the contact information at the bottom of this page.

1.      The Patient As Partner - The Clinical Interview With Persons Who Have Developmental Disabilities is a self-running multimedia lesson providing strategies for working effectively with patients who have developmental disabilities, particularly those who have communication deficits.

2.      Primary Developmental Disorders and Their Associated Conditions offers a self-paced tour through basic information about cerebral palsy, spina bifida, Duchenne muscular dystrophy, Down syndrome, and autism/pervasive developmental disorders. A particular emphasis is placed on common associated clinical conditions.

All text in the presentations is accompanied by voice narration to maximize accessibility.

  1. Basic information about some primary developmental disorders and their associated conditions;

4.      Two standardized patient scenarios and supporting documents. (These scenarios were developed as part of a program at the Matheny School and Hospital, a UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School affiliate, in which third year medical students are asked to engage in a simulated clinical encounter with trained standardized patients who have cerebral palsy and who are nonverbal.)
